This museum houses the most valued cultural treasure in Berlin: the Pergamon Altar. It was built from 180-159 B.C. as a triumphal monument and votive offering to Pergamon's goddess of protection Athena.

The Gemaldegalerie (Picture Gallery) contains some 1,400 paintings with a majority on display.The ground floor has several rooms containing early German Masters. A separate gallery on the ground floor contians Italian paintings. The upper floor exhibits Flemish and Dutch masters of the 17th century. Also housed in the building is the Sculpture Gallery; The Museum fur Volkerkunde (Ethnographical Museum) and the Museums of Far Eastern Art, Islamic Art, and Indian Art.

The famous bust of Queen Nefertiti is here. Dating from 1340 B.C. this is the focal point of the museum whose artifacts span Egyptian history dating back to 4000 B.C..

Housed in a modern glass and steel building designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe this museum contains an outstanding collection of Impressionist and twentieth-century art from Europe and America.
